The Library’s Information and Reference Center has chosen to highlight the
following new reference books to help patrons find answers to a variety of
questions.
BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH
AFRICA, A Gale
Publication
This two volume set offers information in alphabetical listing about people
and events important in the Middle East and North Africa. The encyclopedia is
prefaced with lists of articles, contributors, pronunciation guides and a
chronology of events. Entries range from people like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,
President of Iran, to Israeli soccer player, Yossi Benayoun. Each entry dealing
with a person has biographical highlights, information on their personal
history, influences and legacy, along with, in many cases, a picture. This is a
must-see for those researching the important people and events of the Middle
East.
THE GREENWOOD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CLOTHING THROUGH WORLD
HISTORY, Edited By Jill
Condra
The first of this three volume set holds information on clothing from
prehistory to 1500CE. This ranges from prehistoric and Egyptian clothing to
Persian, Greek and Medieval clothing. The second volume follows with clothing
from 1501-1800, and the final volume is from 1801- the present. Each chapter
lists a timeline of the era and information on the function, textiles and
decoration of clothing associated with that era. Chapters also list web
resources and representative movies. Black and white pictures and highlighted
boxes of information are found throughout the encyclopedia and a glossary of
terms can be found at the end of each volume.
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RACE AND
RACISM, John Hartwell Moore, Editor-in-Chief
Rounding out the Reference Department’s new encyclopedias is the
three-volume Encyclopedia of Race and Racism. This set includes an alphabetical
listing of all things race related. The preface includes a list of articles,
which range from the abolition movement to the zoot suit riots. The articles are
also listed in a thematic outline, for those looking to research themes or
subjects, which range from African American culture to education or sports. As
with the other encyclopedias mentioned, there are black and white pictures,
statistics, and bulleted lists present throughout each volume. This will be
helpful to anyone interested in learning more about race and racism throughout
history.
