The Library's Information and Reference Center has chosen to highlight the
following new books to help patrons find answers to a variety of questions.
CIVIL WAR ALMANAC, by John C. Fredriksen
This 800+ page almanac begins with a chronology of events of the war. It
continues with an alphabetical listing of all those involved in the war; from
Confederate general Edward P. Alexander to Union naval officer John L. Worden.
An appendix near the back of the book lists casualties and major land battles,
followed by maps of major battles. This is a must-read for all Civil War
enthusiasts alike.
WORLD ART: THE ESSENTIAL ILLUSTRATED HISTORY
This full-color history of art begins by listing important art movements in
history including Byzantine, Gothic, Fresco and Early Renaissance, among others.
It lists artists by era, beginning with the Gothic and Medieval Era. A
full-color painting from each artist is shown, along with a description of the
artist and his/her work. A multi page index and list of resources are available
at the end of the book.
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ANCIENT MYTHS AND CULTURE
This full color, 700+ page encyclopedia is separated into sections of
mythology including Greek, Oriental, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Celtic, Viking,
Egyptology and The Romans. Within each of these sections are explanations about
various beliefs and practices within the mythology. For instance, Greek
mythology talks about the birth of the Gods, Greek sculpture, the Greek poets,
and the Constellations. A multi-page index is available at the end of the book.
