Where to Find Free E-Mail Accounts

  • Don't have an Internet Service Provider?
  • Do you travel or move frequently?
  • Do you use more than one computer to access your mail?

Then try one of the sites below and set up a free web-based e-mail account. A web-based e-mail account will allow you to access your e-mail from any Internet-accessible computer including those at Rodman Public Library.

Free Web-Based E-Mail Sites

Mail.com

  • Web-based access or use a mail program (subscription for mail program) 
  • Anti-spam policy
  • Choose a specialized address from one of 100 special domain names available, such as mail.com, engineer.com, or doctor.com
  • Added services are available by subscribing to Mail.com premium services (fee)
Hotmail

http://www.hotmail.com/ 

 

  • Owned by Microsoft Network
  • Available in several different languages
  • Address book
  • Send and receive file attachments
  • File attachments are scanned for viruses (with a free Hotmail account, e-mail attachments are scanned for viruses, but not cleaned)
  • Cannot use this as your primary business address
  • Good anti-spam policy: abuse results in deletion of account, can report abuse to company
  • Advanced spam controls
  • Expect nag messages suggesting the user upgrade to the premium service
  • Some email security- browser must support Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and the option must be enabled to sign in
Lycos Mail

  • From Lycos
  • 5 MB of storage space offered (can be expanded for a yearly fee)
  • Advanced Spam controls
  • Added services: web page services, instant messaging, pop access (fee)
Excite Mail

  • Storage space limit of either 3MB or 1,000 messages
  • Send and receive file attachments
  • Some email security- can connect via SSL

Yahoo! Mail

  • One registration allows access to all Yahoo! services
  • 250MB FREE Storage
  • File attachments are scanned for viruses
  • Uses Spamguard™
  • Yahoo! Messenger instantly notifies you of new mail
